About This

Unique Appearance: Chinese Lanterns, also known as winter cherry or bladder cherry, are grown for their vibrant, papery, bright orange husks that encase a small, edible berry, resembling tiny lanterns.
Ornamental Value: A member of the nightshade family, this perennial is prized in gardens and dried arrangements for its striking husks, which turn from green to orange as they mature in late summer to fall.
Growth Habits: The plant reaches 1-2 feet in height, spreading via rhizomes, and prefers full sun to partial shade with well-drained soil, though it can become invasive if not managed.
Edibility and Caution: While the ripe berries inside the husks are edible and tart, offering a mild tomato-like flavor, the unripe fruit and other plant parts are toxic due to solanine content.
